About
Presbyterian Medical Services is a Santa Fe-headquartered nonprofit that operates a broad network of health and human service programs across New Mexico and parts of neighboring states. Founded in 1969, PMS has grown into one of the largest community-based providers of healthcare and social services in the region, reaching many rural and underserved communities.
The organization delivers a wide array of services, including primary medical and dental care, behavioral health and substance use treatment, and early childhood education through Head Start and child development programs. Many of its clinics function as federally qualified health centers, providing care on a sliding fee scale to patients regardless of their ability to pay.
PMS operates dozens of sites across New Mexico, often in small towns and rural areas where access to healthcare and social services is limited. By placing clinics and programs in these communities, the organization brings services closer to people who might otherwise face long travel distances or go without care. Its behavioral health programs address mental health and addiction, while its senior and developmental disability services support other vulnerable populations.
The breadth of PMS's programming distinguishes it from organizations focused on a single service area. By combining healthcare, behavioral health, early childhood education, and social services under one nonprofit umbrella, PMS addresses interconnected needs across the lifespan, from young children to elders.
New Mexico's rural geography and high rates of poverty create persistent challenges in service delivery, and PMS responds with a decentralized model that reaches communities across the state. Supported by federal and state funding, patient revenue, and grants, Presbyterian Medical Services serves tens of thousands of New Mexicans annually through its extensive network of programs.
