Protecting and restoring New Mexico's wilderness areas and public lands through advocacy, community organizing, and on-the-ground stewardship.
About
New Mexico Wilderness Alliance is a nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to protecting and restoring wilderness and wild lands across New Mexico. Based in Albuquerque, the organization advocates for the permanent protection of public lands and works to safeguard the state's natural landscapes, wildlife habitat, and opportunities for solitude and recreation.
The alliance focuses on identifying, advocating for, and securing protection for wilderness-quality lands throughout New Mexico, including designation of new wilderness areas, national monuments, and other protected designations. It works with communities, elected officials, and federal land management agencies to advance protections for deserving landscapes and to defend existing protected areas from threats.
In addition to advocacy and policy work, the organization conducts on-the-ground stewardship, including volunteer projects to restore habitat, maintain trails, remove invasive species, and care for wild lands. These efforts engage citizens directly in conservation and help maintain the ecological health of protected areas. Wilderness inventories and field surveys help document the values of lands proposed for protection.
New Mexico contains vast public lands of significant ecological, cultural, and recreational value, and the alliance works to ensure that the most important of these remain protected for future generations. Its campaigns have contributed to the protection of numerous areas across the state, balancing conservation with the interests of local communities.
The organization also engages the public through outreach, education, and recreational outings that connect people to wild places and build a constituency for conservation. By fostering appreciation for wilderness, it builds support for its protection efforts.
Supported by members, donations, and grants, New Mexico Wilderness Alliance serves as a leading advocate for wild lands in the state. Through advocacy, stewardship, and public engagement, the organization works to preserve New Mexico's wilderness heritage and the natural landscapes that define much of the state.
