The American Cancer Society offers information,support and resource referrals to cancer patients and caregivers during any stage of the cancer experience. Programs may vary by community. Among the many programs offered:
-Look Good…Feel Better Sessions: Trained, volunteer cosmetologists teach women how to cope with skin changes and hair loss using cosmetics and skin care products donated by the cosmetic industry. Women also learn ways to disguise hair loss with wigs, scarves and other accessories.
-Gift Closets: Gift Closets provide free items such as wigs, breast prosthetics and mastectomy bras. Fittings are usually by appointment.
-Reach To Recovery: One-to-one support from a trained breast cancer survivor with a newly diagnosed breast cancer patient, for moral support, ACS resource access, community resource access, and more.
-Road to Recovery: A volunteer driver provides free transportation to doctor and treatment appointments for current cancer patients.
-Cancer Resource Centers: A designated space in a cancer treatment facility where highly trained American Cancer Society volunteers provide materials, information on community resources and immediate access to the national call center and the ACS web site.
-Camp Enchantment: A place where children go just to be kids and get away from the stress of dealing with cancer. The free week-long camp welcomes children from all over the state.
