About

Southwest CARE Center is a Santa Fe-based nonprofit healthcare organization that began as a leader in HIV and AIDS care and has expanded into broader primary and specialty medical services. Founded in 1989 during the height of the AIDS epidemic, it built a reputation for compassionate, expert care for people living with HIV and has since grown to serve a wider patient population.

The organization provides primary care, infectious disease treatment, hepatitis C care, sexual health services, and prevention programs, including PrEP for HIV prevention. Its roots in HIV care shaped a model centered on nonjudgmental, patient-focused treatment, serving populations that have often faced stigma or barriers in mainstream healthcare settings.

Southwest CARE Center also engages in clinical research, participating in studies related to HIV, hepatitis, and other conditions, contributing to advances in treatment while offering patients access to emerging therapies. Its research arm reflects a dual commitment to direct patient care and to broader scientific progress in infectious disease.

Over the decades, the organization has adapted to changing healthcare needs, expanding services while maintaining its specialized expertise. It serves patients across northern New Mexico, including those who are uninsured or underinsured, and works to connect people to comprehensive, coordinated care.

Beyond clinical services, Southwest CARE Center has been involved in prevention, education, and outreach aimed at reducing the spread of HIV and other infections. Its history is closely tied to the community's response to the AIDS crisis, and it remains a trusted provider for populations who value its experience and approach.

Supported by patient revenue, grants, and donations, Southwest CARE Center continues to provide specialized and primary healthcare in the Santa Fe region and beyond.
