Preserving and presenting flamenco as a living art form through education, performance, and the annual Globalquerque world music festival.
About
The National Institute of Flamenco is an Albuquerque-based nonprofit dedicated to preserving and promoting the art of flamenco through education, performance, and cultural programming. The organization works to advance flamenco as a serious art form and to share its rich Spanish and Romani heritage with audiences and students in New Mexico and beyond.
The institute offers extensive flamenco instruction, teaching dance, music, and song to students of all ages and levels, from young children to professional performers. Its educational programs help cultivate the next generation of flamenco artists and provide opportunities for people to study an art form that has deep cultural roots and demanding technical traditions.
A signature undertaking is the annual Festival Flamenco Alburquerque, one of the most significant flamenco festivals outside of Spain, which brings world-renowned flamenco artists to Albuquerque for performances, workshops, and intensive instruction. The festival draws performers and students from around the world and has helped establish Albuquerque as an important center for flamenco in the United States.
The organization is closely associated with Tierra Adentro, a charter school that integrates flamenco and arts education with academics, reflecting the institute's commitment to using the art form as a vehicle for youth development and cultural education. Through these efforts, flamenco becomes both an artistic pursuit and a means of building discipline, confidence, and cultural connection.
New Mexico's deep Hispanic heritage makes it a fitting home for an institution dedicated to flamenco, and the National Institute of Flamenco has built a national reputation for excellence. Supported by tuition, performance revenue, donations, and grants, the organization sustains a vibrant flamenco community in Albuquerque while honoring and advancing a cherished cultural tradition.
